Given in the midst of the Exodus of the Jews from Egyptian bondage, the 10 Commandments were delivered. They are based on this statement: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery” (Exodus 20:2). This text outlined for the Jews who God is & what He had done for them. The Decalogue is grounded in the truth that it is the Lord our God who gives the great commandments.
This part of The Decalogue series addresses the characteristics of God and how the commands of God reflect His holiness. It also addresses why we are to obey God’s Law, as the Scripture states: “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15-16).
Finally, the message speaks to the debate on the relationship between OT & NT moral laws & duties, which is the essence of the problems the churches of Galatia were experiencing, which Paul addressed in his epistle to the Galatians. Jesus had this to say about it: Matt 5:17-18 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven & earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”
Has the Old Testament been done away with? What does it mean that Jesus fulfilled the Law? These are some of the issues addressed in this part of the series The Decalogue.”
